Kanal to Square Feet Converter

1 kanal is 4,500 sq ft in most housing societies and 5,445 sq ft in revenue records (fard, patwari). Where a 250 sq ft marla is used, 1 kanal is 5,000 sq ft. The kanal is always 20 marla; the square feet change because the marla changes.

So 2 kanal is 9,000 sq ft in a society and 10,890 sq ft on the revenue scale. Pick the marla size above, type the number of kanal, and the converter also gives square yards, square metres and acres.

The formula is simple: square feet = kanal × 20 × marla size. For the revenue scale that is kanal × 5,445.

Square feet to kanal

Divide the square feet by 4,500 for the kanal used in DHA and most housing societies, or by 5,445 for the revenue kanal in land records. Choose square feet in the "From" box above and the converter also writes the answer as kanal, marla and loose square feet.

Writing the leftover as marla

1. Divide the sq ft by the kanal size and keep the whole number as kanal.
2. Divide the square feet left over by the marla size (225 or 272.25) and keep the whole number as marla.
3. Whatever is left is loose square feet.

For 10,000 sq ft on the society scale: 2 kanal uses 9,000 sq ft, and the 1,000 sq ft left is 4 marla (900 sq ft) and 100 sq ft.

1 kanal plot size: 50 × 90 ft

A plot's area is its front × depth. Pairs that give exactly 1 kanal:

• 50 ft × 90 ft = 4,500 sq ft, the standard 1 kanal plot in DHA Lahore (section 4.a of its Construction and Development Regulations 2026) and DHA Gujranwala
• 55 ft × 99 ft = 5,445 sq ft, one kanal on the revenue scale (10 karam by 18 karam)
• 50 ft × 100 ft = 5,000 sq ft, one kanal on the 250 sq ft marla

How much house fits on 1 kanal

Section 22.a of the DHA Lahore rules asks for clear spaces of 15 ft 9 in at the front, 5 ft 4.5 in at the rear and 5 ft 4.5 in on both sides:

1. Ground floor: (50 − 10.75) × (90 − 15.75 − 5.375) = 39.25 × 68.875 = 2,703.3 sq ft
2. First floor at 80% of the ground floor (section 27.a): 2,162.7 sq ft
3. Double storey total: about 4,866 sq ft, within the 39 ft height limit

Under the LDA Building and Zoning Regulations 2019 a 1 kanal house is in the band "1 kanal to 30 marla": 65% ground coverage (clause 2.2.3), with a 10 ft building line, 7 ft rear space and 5 ft on one side (clause 2.2.1). On 50 × 90 ft the spaces leave 45 × 73 = 3,285 sq ft, but 65% of 4,500 is 2,925 sq ft, which is the limit.

Worked example: comparing two 1 kanal offers

Two sellers each offer a "1 kanal" plot for Rs 30,000,000. One is in a society that uses the 225 sq ft marla. The other is agricultural land measured in the fard at 272.25 sq ft.

1. Society plot: 20 × 225 = 4,500 sq ft. Price per sq ft: 30,000,000 ÷ 4,500 = Rs 6,667.
2. Revenue plot: 20 × 272.25 = 5,445 sq ft. Price per sq ft: 30,000,000 ÷ 5,445 = Rs 5,510.

The revenue plot has 945 sq ft more land, about 21% more. The prices are only an illustration of the arithmetic. Compare by square feet, not by the kanal label. To go the other way, the square feet to marla converter turns a measured area back into marla and kanal.

4 kanal: half an acre and farm house plots

4 kanal is 18,000 sq ft (2,000 gaz) on the society kanal and 21,780 sq ft on the revenue kanal, which is exactly half an acre and one Punjab bigha. In karam it is 24 by 30 karam, or 132 × 165 ft.

The Punjab Private Housing Schemes and Land Sub-division Rules 2010 set a minimum plot of 4 kanal in farm housing schemes, while general schemes were capped at 1,000 square yards (2 kanal). In LDA approved schemes a 4 kanal house is in the top band: 55% ground coverage, with a 20 ft building line and 10 ft rear and side spaces on both sides. On a 120 × 150 ft plot the spaces leave 100 × 120 = 12,000 sq ft, but 55% is 9,900 sq ft, which is the limit.

Worked example: a plot measured on the ground

A plot on the edge of the city measures 150 ft by 120 ft, so 18,000 sq ft. That is exactly 4 society kanal, but only 3.31 revenue kanal (3 kanal 6 marla and 31.5 sq ft). If the seller's papers say 4 kanal on the revenue scale, the land should be 21,780 sq ft, 3,780 sq ft more. Measure before you pay by the kanal.

Plot area is not covered area

A 1 kanal plot of 4,500 sq ft does not give you a 4,500 sq ft house. Building rules set setbacks at the front, back and sides, and a limit on how much of the plot can be covered. The covered area of a double-storey house can be more than the plot area, because it counts both floors. When an advert says "1 kanal house, 5,000 sq ft", ask whether that is the plot or the covered area.
