Housing societies use a smaller kanal of 4,500 sq ft. An acre of 43,560 sq ft holds 9.68 of those, so 1 society kanal is 0.1033 acre. Pick the marla size above to switch.

Which kanal to use

Farm land and revenue records

The fard, jamabandi and registry deeds outside housing schemes use the revenue chain: 1 marla is 272.25 sq ft, 1 kanal is 5,445 sq ft (605 square yards) and 8 kanal is exactly one acre. In canal colony areas an acre is also called a killa. When you convert farm land, keep the 272.25 setting.

Housing societies

DHA Lahore defines a kanal as 20 marla, 500 square yards or 4,500 sq ft in its Construction and Development Regulations 2026. On that kanal an acre is 43,560 ÷ 4,500 = 9.68 kanal. Society brochures sometimes quote the total scheme area in acres and the plots in kanal, so the two scales end up on the same page.

Acre to kanal and marla

An acre is always 43,560 sq ft. On the revenue scale it fits exactly 8 kanal or 160 marla, which is why farm land and land records use it.

Acre Kanal Marla Square feet
0.5 4 80 21,780
1 8 160 43,560
2 16 320 87,120
5 40 800 217,800
10 80 1,600 435,600
25 (1 murabba) 200 4,000 1,089,000

The revenue chain runs: 9 sarsai = 1 marla (272.25 sq ft), 20 marla = 1 kanal (5,445 sq ft), 4 kanal = 1 bigha, 8 kanal = 1 acre or killa, and 25 acres = 1 murabba. On the 225 sq ft society marla the same acre is 193.6 marla or 9.68 kanal, and on a 250 sq ft marla 174.24 marla. For the marla count alone, see acre to marla.

Hectare to kanal

1 hectare is 19.77 revenue kanal, which is 19 kanal 15 marla and about 100 sq ft, or 2.47 acres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres (107,639 sq ft). Choose hectare in the "From" box above, or read the table:

HectareKanal, 225 sq ft marlaKanal, 272.25 sq ft marla

0.5 ha11.969.88
1 ha23.9219.77

10 ha239.20197.68
25 ha598494.21
100 ha2,391.981,976.84

For agricultural land, use the 272.25 sq ft column. Hectares turn up in crop statistics, the agricultural census and land acquisition plans for roads and canals, while the fard writes land in kanal and marla.

Worked example: land needed for a road

A road plan shows that 0.75 hectare of a family's land falls inside the new alignment.

  1. Square feet: 0.75 × 107,639.10 = 80,729.33 sq ft
  2. Revenue kanal: 80,729.33 ÷ 5,445 = 14.83 kanal, which is 14 kanal and 16 marla (80,729.33 − 76,230 leaves 4,499.33 sq ft, 16 marla and 143.33 sq ft)
  3. Acres: 80,729.33 ÷ 43,560 = 1.85 acres

Any notice to owners names the khasra numbers; check them and the area against your fard with the patwari.

Worked example: land bought by the acre, sold by the kanal

A developer buys 100 acres of farm land and plans 1 kanal plots.

  1. Revenue kanal: 100 × 8 = 800 kanal on the fard.
  2. Square feet: 100 × 43,560 = 4,356,000 sq ft.
  3. Society kanal of 4,500 sq ft: 4,356,000 ÷ 4,500 = 968 kanal of gross area.

The same land holds 168 more kanal once the kanal is redefined. Roads, parks, graveyards and other public uses then take a large share of the gross area, so the number of saleable 1 kanal plots is far lower than 968. A buyer comparing rates per kanal between farm land and society plots should convert both to sq ft or to acres first.

Survey and building plans in square metres can be turned into marla with the square metre to marla converter.

An acre is 43,560 sq ft everywhere. Only the kanal changes. If a document gives both kanal and acres, divide the square feet by 43,560 to check which kanal it uses.
