Why a family pays more for a visitor visa

For the Visitor visa, Home Affairs does not allow additional applicants. Each person, including a child listed on a parent's passport, lodges a separate application and pays the full AUD 250. A family of four therefore pays AUD 1,000, about Rs 192,340.

The Student visa works differently. The student pays the base charge and the partner and children can be included in the same application at the lower additional applicant charges shown above. Home Affairs charges less for English language (ELICOS) and non-award courses: AUD 2,050 for the student, AUD 1,255 for an adult family member and AUD 410 for a child. A postgraduate research student pays AUD 2,500 and family members cannot be added to that application.

Worked examples

Parents visiting their son in Melbourne

Both parents apply for the Visitor visa, Tourist stream, from Lahore. They pay 2 x AUD 250 = AUD 500, about Rs 96,170. If their bank charges Rs 200 per Australian dollar, the cost is Rs 100,000.

A master's student with a spouse and child

Item Amount
Base application charge, student AUD 2,500
Spouse, 18 or over AUD 1,530
Child under 18 AUD 500
Total AUD 4,530

At Rs 192.34 per dollar that is about Rs 871,300. English test fees come on top: see the PTE fee and IELTS fee calculators.

Costs that are not part of the visa charge

  • Subsequent temporary application charge: AUD 700, charged on some applications made while already in Australia. It does not apply when you apply from Pakistan.
  • Health examinations and police certificates: paid separately to the clinic or police service that provides them, for example a police character certificate.
  • Visa application centre services: paid to the centre if you use them.

Home Affairs reviews visa charges from time to time. Check the amount shown in ImmiAccount before you pay.
