1 tola is 11.6638 grams. It is exactly 180 grains, or three eighths of a troy ounce, and it is the weight used for gold and silver in Pakistan. So 10 tola is 116.638 g. Going the other way, divide grams by 11.6638: 10 grams is 0.8574 tola and 100 grams is 8.5735 tola.

To turn grams into tola, masha and ratti, take the whole tola first, then divide the grams left over by 0.97198 for masha and the rest by 0.1215 for ratti. For 20 g: 20 ÷ 11.6638 = 1 tola with 8.3362 g left; 8.3362 ÷ 0.97198 = 8 masha with 0.5603 g left; 0.5603 ÷ 0.1215 = 4.61 ratti.

Masha and ratti to grams

Unit Grams In masha In ratti
1 tola 11.6638 12 96
1 masha 0.97198 1 8
1 ratti 0.12150 1/8 1

3 2.916 quarter tola
4 3.888 a third of a tola
6 5.832 half tola
8 7.776 two thirds of a tola
12 11.664 1 tola

A masha is close to a gram but not equal to it: 1 gram is 1.029 masha, so treating them as the same is off by about 2.9%.

Worked example: reading a jeweller's weight

A bangle weighs 1 tola 4 masha 3 ratti.

  1. 1 tola = 11.6638 g
  2. 4 masha = 4 × 0.97198 = 3.8879 g
  3. 3 ratti = 3 × 0.12150 = 0.3645 g
  4. Total: 15.9162 g, or 1 + 4 ÷ 12 + 3 ÷ 96 = 1.3646 tola

Checking a receipt on a scale

A receipt says 2 tola 3 masha and a home scale shows 26.21 g. Expected: 2 × 11.6638 + 3 × 0.97198 = 26.2435 g. The 0.03 g gap is within what a pocket scale can show. A gap of a gram or more is worth raising with the jeweller.

Goldsmith ratti and gem ratti

Gold uses the goldsmith (sunari) ratti, a 96th of a tola. Gemstone sellers use a heavier gem (pakki) ratti, 1.5 goldsmith ratti. Choose "Gem ratti" in the converter for stones.

Ratti Grams Milligrams Carats Used for
Goldsmith ratti 0.1215 121.5 0.6075 Gold and silver
Gem ratti 0.18225 182.25 0.911 Pukhraj, neelam, feroza and other stones

One carat is exactly 0.2 g, so a carat is 1.646 goldsmith ratti or 1.097 gem ratti. A gem certificate gives carats: divide by 0.911 to get gem ratti, so a 5.5 carat stone is about 6.04 gem ratti.

Worked example: a 5 ratti stone

  • Gem ratti: 5 × 0.18225 = 0.911 g, which is 4.56 carats
  • Goldsmith ratti: 5 × 0.1215 = 0.6075 g, which is 3.04 carats

The gem ratti stone is 50% heavier, so ask which ratti is meant and check the weight in carats or grams.

Ratti deductions on old gold

When you sell old jewellery, a deduction of 2 ratti per tola means 2 ÷ 96 = 2.08% of the gold is not paid for. On 3 tola that is 6 ratti, or 0.729 g.

Tola and troy ounce

World gold prices are quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 g). A tola is exactly 0.375 troy ounce, so 1 troy ounce is 2.6667 tola, and 10 tola is 3.75 troy ounces.

To turn an international price per ounce into a price per tola, multiply by 0.375, then convert dollars to rupees. Local rates also include the local premium, so the result will not match the sarafa rate exactly.

To value a weight of silver rather than gold, use the silver calculator. Grain and produce are weighed in a different system, the man (40 kg) and the ser.
