Khyber Medical University marks semester courses on a short half-point scale, and the pass mark is 60, not 50. 60 to 64 is C (2.0), 65 to 69 is C+ (2.5), 70 to 74 is B (3.0), 75 to 79 is B+ (3.5) and 80 and above is A or A+ (4.0). Anything below 60 is F with zero points.
Enter your marks out of 100 and the credit hours of each course. The calculator applies the KMU table, multiplies each numeric grade by its credit hours and divides by your total credit hours. Add your previous CGPA and credit hours to see your new CGPA.
KMU grading system for BS (level 6) semesters
Regulation 10(a) of the KMU Semester System Examinations Regulations 2017 (amended 2023), for graduate level semester examinations.
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 90 and above | A+ | 4.00 |
| 80 to 89 | A | 4.00 |
| 75 to 79 | B+ | 3.50 |
| 70 to 74 | B | 3.00 |
| 65 to 69 | C+ | 2.50 |
| 60 to 64 | C | 2.00 |
| Below 60 | F | 0.00 |
There are no minus grades and no D. A+ and A carry the same 4.0, so every mark from 80 to 100 earns full points.
Worked example: one KMU semester
| Course | Credit hours | Marks | Grade | Numeric grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anatomy | 3 | 78 | B+ | 3.5 | 10.5 |
| Physiology | 3 | 66 | C+ | 2.5 | 7.5 |
| Biochemistry | 3 | 83 | A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| English | 2 | 91 | A+ | 4.0 | 8.0 |
| Fundamentals of Nursing, 4(3+1) | 4 | 72 | B | 3.0 | 12.0 |
| Total | 15 | 50.0 |
GPA = 50.0 ÷ 15 = 3.33.
The same marks on the HEC style scale give 3.20, because there 78 is B+ at 3.33, 66 is C+ at 2.33 and 83 is A- at 3.66. KMU's half-point bands give more points at 60, 65 to 67, 70 and 75 to 84, and fewer at 64, 68 and 69, where the HEC scale has already moved up a grade. Below 60 the gap is widest: KMU fails the course, while the HEC scale still gives a C-, D+ or D from 50 up.
If the English mark had been 55 instead of 91, that course would be F, its 2 credit hours would still count, and the GPA would fall to 2.80.
KMU grading for MS and MPhil semesters
Regulation 10(b) uses a different table for postgraduate semester examinations. The bands are wider and A starts at 85.
| Marks (%) | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| 85 and above | A | 4.00 |
| 79 to 84 | B+ | 3.50 |
| 70 to 78 | B | 3.00 |
| 60 to 69 | C | 2.00 |
| Below 60 | F | 0.00 |
For an MS or MPhil result, choose Grade points in the calculator and enter the numeric grade printed for each course. Degree completion needs a CGPA of 2.50 at this level.
Failing, repeating and the CGPA KMU needs
The semester system at KMU has no supplementary or special exam. If you fail a course you repeat it. The old grade is then replaced by the new grade in your CGPA, and both grades stay on your transcript. In the example above, repeating the failed English course and scoring 70 (B) lifts the GPA from 2.80 to 3.20. Use the repeat option in the calculator to test your own case.
To complete a BS degree you need a CGPA of at least 2.00. A student below 2.00 at the end of the final semester may be re-admitted in the courses graded below C, within the time limit for the programme. You also need 75% attendance in a course to receive a passing grade.
How marks are split
In BS semesters the mid term carries 20%, the final term 70% and internal evaluation 10%. That internal 10% is made up of quizzes, tests, assignments and presentations. MS, MPhil and PhD course work uses 30%, 50% and 20%. In a 4(3+1) course the practical part may carry 25%.
KMU converts CGPA to a percentage with the HEC formula: see CGPA to percentage. Applying for medicine or dentistry instead? The KMU aggregate calculator works out admission merit.
Questions people ask
How is GPA calculated at KMU?
Multiply the numeric grade of each course by its credit hours to get grade points. Add the grade points for the semester and divide by the total credit hours. For CGPA, divide the grade points of all semesters by all credit hours taken. A 3 credit course at 76 marks gives 3.5 x 3 = 10.5 grade points.
What are the passing marks at Khyber Medical University?
In the semester system a course needs 60 marks out of 100. 60 to 64 is C, worth 2.0. Below 60 is F with 0.0 points, and the course must be repeated, as there is no supplementary exam in the semester system.
What GPA is 80 marks at KMU?
80 marks is an A, worth 4.0, the highest numeric grade. KMU gives 4.0 to every mark from 80 to 100 at BS level. At MS and MPhil level, A starts at 85, and 80 is B+ worth 3.5.
Does a repeated course replace the old grade in KMU CGPA?
Yes. The KMU regulations say the old grade is substituted by the new one for CGPA, and both grades are shown on the transcript. The credit hours are counted once.
What CGPA is needed to get a KMU degree?
At least 2.00 for a BS degree and 2.50 for MS or MPhil. A BS student who ends below 2.00 may be re-admitted in courses graded below C to raise the CGPA.
